De vergeten en betoverend “lyra-viol” was een manier om de viola da gamba met akkoorden te spelen, zeer populair in het 17e-eeuwse Engeland. Met musici Robert Smith, Nicholas Milne, Rie Kimura, Fred Jacobs & Menno van Delft.

De Lyra-Viol, een instrument, een manier van spelen

Voor degenen die de eigenzinnigheid van de lyra-viol omarmen, wacht een rijk en resonerend repertoire om ons mee te nemen naar de klankwereld van het Engeland van het begin van de 17e eeuw.

De lyra-viol is een akkoordachtige manier om de viola da gamba te bespelen die, ondanks zijn populariteit in de 17e eeuw, tegenwoordig grotendeels vergeten is. De kenmerken die het tot een fascinerend instrument maken, hebben er ook toe bijgedragen dat het in de vergetelheid is geraakt. De 6 snaren van de viola da gamba kunnen op verschillende manieren gestemd worden (scordatura) – perfect voor een avondje vermaak thuis, maar onpraktisch voor het hedendaagse concertleven. muziek is in tabulatuur opgeschreven, vaak met de hand, en de moeilijkheden bij het ontcijferen en lezen vormen een barrière voor veel mensen die het repertoire proberen te verkennen.

De lyra-viol in consort

De meest vooraanstaande musici van Engeland schreven muziek voor de lyra-gamba – John Jenkins, Christopher Simpson, Alfonso Ferrabosco II – en deze floreerde daar van 1600 tot het einde van de eeuw. Dit concert bevat opmerkelijke werken die deze componisten hebben geschreven voor de lyra-gamba in combinatie met andere instrumenten zoals de luit, viool, klavecimbel en “gewone” bas-gamba. Naast de dansmuziek van die tijd presenteren we ook programmatische stukken over thema’s zoals echo’s, klokken, rouwenden, klaagzangen en ballades.

Robert Smith is een prominente gambaspeler in Nederland en heeft zich de afgelopen twee jaar grotendeels geconcentreerd op de geschiedenis en het repertoire van de lyra-gamba.

The Lyra-Viol, an instrument, a way of playing

For those who embrace the quirks of the lyra-viol, a rich and resonant repertoire awaits to take us into the sound world of early 17^th century England.

The lyra-viol is a chordal way of playing the viola da gamba that, despite its popularity in the 17^th Century, is largely forgotten today. The features that make it a fascinating instrument have also contributed to its oblivion. The 6 strings of the viola da gamba may be tuned in many ways (scordatura) – perfect for an evening’s entertainment at home, but impractical for today’s concert life. Some instruments even had an additional set of sympathetic strings. The music is written down in tablature, often by hand, and the difficulties in deciphering and reading it are a barrier to many people who try to explore the repertoire.

The lyra-viol in consort

England’s most outstanding musicians wrote music for the lyra-viol – John Jenkins, Christopher Simpson, Alfonso Ferrabosco II – and it flourished there from 1600 until the end of the century. This concert features remarkable works written by these composers for the lyra-viol in combination with other instruments such as the lute, violin, harpsichord and “normal” bass-viol. Next to the dance music of the time, we will also present programmatic pieces on the subjects of echos, bells, mourners, lamentations and ballads.

Robert Smith is a prominent gamba player in the Netherlands and has spent much of the last two years focused on the history and repertoire of the lyra-viol.
