4 sterren in Trouw

(Smith is conscientious and combines his finely worked-out craftsmanship with a playful tone, now and then gliding over the strings. He precisely determines the amount of light he allows into Telemann’s music, and the light that shines is always clear with rich shades of colour.)

Gramophone and BBC Reviews

Two great Telemann reviews in from Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine!

BBC gave a double 5-star review, for Performance and Recording!

Robert Smith is not the first in the field with his recording, but the expressive warmth … feeling for rhetoric and accomplished technique deserve to win many friends.

And Lindsay Kemp at Gramophone commented:

Smith navigates Telemann’s fleeting moods with assurance and focus – whether in the concentrated harmonies of a grave slow movement or in the sprightly dancelike release of an allegro finale – and finds tellingly timed rhetorical space between phrases.

Guillemain recording with Fantasticus

Fantasticus just finished recording their latest CD, Louis-Gabriel Guillemain’s Op.12 Quartets for Flute, Violin, Viola da gamba and harpsichord. We had the immense pleasure of working with the great Wilbert Hazelzet on traverso flute. The recording should appear sometime next year on Resonus Classics, so keep an eye on this space – or better still the Fantasticus facebook page: www.facebook.com/fantasticus.baroque/

Two more reviews for Telemann!

In this months Classical Music magazine, the Telemann Fantasias received 5 stars:

This freshness and excitement are tangible on the current disc, well-filled and beautifully recorded, such that at no point does the ear tire of a solitary viola da gamba.

The recording also received a review in the Nederlandse Dagblad:

Robert doet een overtuigend pleidooi voor deze muziek. Prachtig zijn de muzikale stijlmiddelen die Smith gebruikt om deze muziek tot leven te brengen.

Robert makes a convincing argument for this music. The various musical styles employed by Smith are beautiful and bring this music to life.

In contrast to the first review the Dagblad found that perhaps 80 minutes of unaccompanied music was too much of a good thing. You’ll have to decide for yourselves!

PRJCT Amsterdam

I’m enjoying a great Vivaldi and Pergolesi project at the moment with the great Dutch countertenor, Maarten Engeltjes. Here’s some photos from the first concert. 3 more concerts this weekend in Holland!

BBC Record Review

Andrew McGregor featured the Telemann Fantasia in G major on his Record Review programme on BBC Radio 3 last Saturday. You can listen back to the programme here, and the Telemann part starts at 1:29:40

According to McGregor:

Smith is alive to the fantasy and to Telemann’s musical and technical ingenuity.
